Module 13 · The Divine Perspective

Understanding Does Not Mean Excusing

20 min

Holding compassion and boundaries at the same time — the difference between an explanation and an excuse, and why forgiveness is never required.

Understanding the history behind someone’s behavior can release confusion, self-blame, and shame. However, understanding must never become an excuse for continuing harm.

We can hold two truths at the same time:

“That person may have been deeply wounded.”

“What they did to me was still wrong.”

We can have compassion for someone’s history without giving them continued access to hurt us.

Forgiveness does not require reconciliation.

Understanding does not require permission.

Compassion does not require the abandonment of boundaries.

The Divine Healer helps the client distinguish an explanation from an excuse. An explanation may answer, “Where did this behavior come from?” An excuse says, “Therefore, the behavior should be tolerated.” These are not the same.

Understanding can free the client from carrying another person’s pain as a judgment of their own worth. Boundaries protect the client from continuing to receive the consequences of that pain.

Questions for Healthy Discernment

• Does understanding this person’s history change what I believe about my own worth?

• Am I using compassion to avoid establishing a necessary boundary?

• What behavior am I no longer willing to accept?

• What would compassion for myself look like?

• Can I release hatred without reopening the door to harm?

• What relationship, if any, feels emotionally and physically safe now?

Forgiveness must never be forced. It is not a requirement for healing, and it may mean different things to different people. The client is allowed to heal at their own pace and decide what degree of contact, distance, or closure is right for them.
