How to Become a Hypnotherapist
A practical, honest roadmap — from your first training hour to your first paying client — written for people who want to help others heal.
1. Understand what a hypnotherapist actually does
A hypnotherapist guides clients into a relaxed, focused state — often called trance or the Divine State of Mind® — where the subconscious becomes open to change. In that state, clients can release long-held fears, revisit the origins of a wound, and reframe old beliefs. Hypnotherapy is not stage hypnosis. It is a gentle, collaborative therapy where the client is always aware and in control.
2. Choose your training path
Hypnotherapy is not licensed the way psychology is in most U.S. states, which means certification is the standard credential. Look for a program that teaches:
- Inductions, deepeners, and safe emergence
- Client intake, ethics, and scope of practice
- Suggestion therapy for anxiety, habits, and confidence
- Regression work (age regression and, if you feel called, past-life regression)
- How to run a real session from opening to close
The Divine Healing Hypnotherapy Certification covers all of the above, plus the RESET Technique© for releasing suppressed emotional trauma.
3. Complete your certification
A good online certification takes most students 8–16 weeks of steady work. You'll study modules, practice with volunteers, and pass a course assessment. When you finish, you receive a certificate you can display and reference on your website.
4. Practice, practice, practice
Book friends and family for free sessions. Record what worked, what surprised you, and where you felt uncertain. Hypnotherapy is a skill of presence — the more sessions you hold, the more natural your voice, pacing, and intuition become.
5. Set up your practice
You'll need a quiet space (in person or on Zoom), simple intake forms, a way to accept payment, and clear language about what you offer. Consider professional liability insurance and check your state's rules about calling your work "therapy."
6. Keep growing
The best hypnotherapists never stop learning. Read Susan Lawrence's books, listen to session recordings, and revisit your own inner work. Your clients feel who you are before they feel your technique.
